100% Cotton Naturally Dyed Yarns
Sarah Jackson's next 4-shaft Weave-Along will explore using an 8/2 cotton (hand dyed with natural dyes in Guatemala) and sewing thread to achieve this ancient-culture motif.

The soft pastel shades of cochineal, madder, indigo and osage orange in this towel kit blend into a soothing design that really showcases the yarns.

The Natural Dye Project
Sarah has a special place in her heart for the women of Rabinal, Guatemala. Sarah volunteered her time and expertise in the original Tintes Naturales: Friendship Towel kit. She felt that the best way to help support these women was to use the yarns in this next Weave-Along. Click HERE to learn more about The Natural Dye Project and the women who dyed these yarns.

Design Motif
Sarah has named these towels for the way they remind her of the soft glowing light we see at twilight when the sun is just below the horizon. They were woven with yarns dyed by natural dyers working with Mayan Hands, a fair trade organization in Guatemala that preserves traditional textile heritage and helps Guatemalan women earn a living doing skilled work.

Weave Structure
The main criteria for this design was something that would suggest the geometric motifs found in much of the traditional weaving patterns of Guatemala. In searching for an appropriate weave structure , Sarah discovered a variation of traditional ripsmatta (commonly known as rep weave) by Joanne Tallarovic in which she combined 8/2 cotton and sewing thread to create cloth with a weight and drape perfectly suitable for towels.

Please NOTE!
When weaving with the Dye Project yarns, please be aware of these factors:
1. In order to avoid complicating the process of packaging the yarns, the yarn pack contains the same amount of each color of yarn for the towels that were originally designed for the project.

2. The intensity of color will vary from yarn pack to yarn pack. This is completely understandable considering the noncommercial conditions under which the yarns are dyed. The yarns used for the Mayan Twilight Towels are softer colors and more muted than what was used for the Friendship Towels. Both are lovely.

3. You will have varying amounts of yarn left over. Sarah used the Light Indigo in the warp but opted not to use it as weft because the color was so soft. You may choose to use your colors in the same or a different way than she did or reserve them for another project
