Warping Your Rigid Heddle Loom

We highly recommend the book The Weaver's Idea Book: Creative Cloth on a Rigid Heddle Loom or the DVD Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom DVD which are fantastic sources for ideas and instructions on Rigid Heddle Weaving.

Here are a few quick tips to get you started:

Step 1. Determine the length of your warp. Place a peg that distance away from the back apron rod.

Step 2. Place the yarn on the floor under the back beam of the loom.

Step 3. Determine the width of your weaving project. (divide the width by 2 and measure out that distance from the center of your heddle)

Step 4. Bring the apron rod up and over the back beam and tie on the warp end to the apron rod. Line the yarn up to the slot in your heddle where you have measured from step 3.

Step 5. Insert the heddle hook from front side of heddle and sley the yarn through. Carry this yarn to your warping peg and place over peg. (There will be two warp ends through slot)

Step 6. Continue to draw yarns through the slots, around the back apron rod and to the peg for the desired number of warp ends needed for your project. You can change colors in your warp by tying off a yarn onto the apron rod and then tie on a new yarn and continue across according to your warp color order.

Step 7. Remove the loop from the peg and cut the end of the loop. Then tie it in a loose overhand knot which will keep yarns from getting tangled.

Step 8. Wind the warp onto the back beam adding layers of heavy paper until about 10" of the yarns remain in front of the heddle.

Step 9. Working from the front of the loom, take 1 end from the slot and sley it into the adjacent hole using your heddle hook.

Step 10. After all of the slots and holes have been threaded, check your work to make sure there is one thread in each hole and one thread in each slot.

Step 11. Bring the front apron rod up and over the front beam. Take a bundle of 4-5 strands and tie in a loose knot onto the apron rod. Repeat across the entire warp tying the bundles of 4-5 strands onto the rod. Adjust each knot as necessary until the warp tension is even all the way across then tighten knots.

Step 12. Adjust both front and back beam until you have a good tension and you are ready to weave!
