Gauge: 8.5 sts/in (34 sts/10 cm) on foot with smaller needles; 9 spi over the vertical stripes with larger needles.

Abbreviations:
bet = between; CO = cast on; cont = continue; k = knit; k2tog = knit 2 sts together; p = purl; PM = place maker; PU = pick up; rep = repeat; rnd = round; RS = right side; st(s) = stitch(es); WS = wrong side; yo = yarn over

Cast-on & Cuff
With larger dpn (or needles needed to obtain correct gauge), & solid color, CO 75 sts. P 1 row & join, being careful not to twist. PM for end of round.
Work lacey cuff as follows (12 st rep with extra 3 sts at beg):
Rnd 1: k1, p1, k1 *[(k2tog) twice; (k1yo) 4 times; (k2tog) twice]; rep around.
Rnds 2 & 3: k1, p1, k1; K around.
Rnd 4: k1, p1, k1; P around.
Work 4 reps of pattern with solid color. Change to tonal yarn, and work in pattern for 6 reps.

Ribbon stripes:
Work Rnds 2 & 3 once more, inc 3 st evenly around.
Rejoin solid color.
Work as K3 A (solid), K3 B (tonal). Work as loosely as possible, and use larger needle if necessary to keep knitting loose so sock will fit. The extra 6 sts should be sufficient to aid in this.

Stripes should be knit until they are long enough to show below lacey cuff. Cuff shown in pattern is ~3-3.25 in. depending on where in “wave” you measure; ribbon band is ~3.5 in. long.

Heel
Cut tonal yarn & work heel with solid only.
K across 20 sts; turn & P back across 40 sts. Set rem sts aside for instep.
Work heel as follows:
a) *(Sl-1, k1) across; turn.
b) Sl-1 st and P across; turn
Work two rows above until heel measures 2.5 in. from start.
Turn Heel
K across 22 sts; k2tog, k1, turn.
a) Sl-1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
b) Sl-1, K to 1 st before gap, k2tog, k1, turn.
c) Sl-1, P to 1 st before gap, p2tog, p1, turn.
Rep these last two rows until all sts have been worked. End on WS.
Gusset Pickups
Continue with solid yarn.
K across half sts – these will end up on needle #3.
With a new needle (#1), PU & K slipped loops going down side of sock.
With another needle (#2) work instep sts as k2-p2 rib.
Now with new needle #3, PU gusset st going up other side of sock & K sts on needle 3.
Gusset Decreases: Cut solid yarn, change to tonal for gussets & foot.
Needles 1 & 3 are worked as k1-p1 rib, with care to keep last st on needle 1 & 1st st on needle 3 as K st. Needle 2 is worked as k2-p2 rib.
Work 1 rnd with no changes.
Now work gusset sts:
Dec round: Needle 1, work k1-p1 rib across to last 3 sts; k2 tog, k1; Needle 2, work k2-p2 rib pattern; Needle 3, K1, Sl-1, purl 1, pass slip st over; & work as k1-p1 rib across.
Plain round: needles 1 & 3 are worked as k1-p1 rib. Needle 2 is worked as k2-p2 rib.
Work these 2 rnds until returned to original CO number: 72 sts or desired # for your foot.
Foot: Remainder of foot is worked as St st only (K every round). Cont knitting until foot is ~7.25 in. or ~2 in. shorter than your longest toe. Cut tonal yarn & attach solid yarn for toe.

Toe
Check to see that sts are dispersed properly: ~ half on needle 2, with other half split evenly between needles 1 & 3.
Toe decs are worked in 2 rounds:
Round 1: Ndl 1: K to last 3 sts, k2tog, and k1; Ndl 2: K1, Sl-1, k1, pass slip st over (psso), K to last 3 st, k2tog, and k1; Ndl 3: k1, sl-1, k1, psso, K to end.
Round 2: K all sts, with no changes.
K toe, alternating rnds 1 & 2 until only ~20 sts rem.
K every rnd as a dec rnd –
Needle 1: K to last 3 sts, k2tog, and k1.
Needle 2: k1, Sl-1, k1, pass slip st over (psso), K to last 3 sts, k2tog, and k1.
Needle 3: k1, sl-1, k1, psso, K to end.
When only ~8 sts rem, cut yarn leaving 8 in. (~20 cm) end.
Close toe as desired. Laura's preferred method is to use a crochet hook and pull yarn end through each st, and drop it off needle. Pull snugly to gather and move end to inside.

Finishing
Using crochet hook or tapestry needle, weave in yarn ends from toe and cast-on. If you work in end diagonally, through 3 sts upwards & 3 downwards, it won’t work free easily.
