Gauge: 8 st/in. (32 st/10 cm) in St st with #1.5 US needles.
Changing Sizes: pattern is 6 st repeat. Add or subtract st in 6 st multiples to adjust sizing.
Cast-on: With #1.5 US DPN (or needles needed to obtain correct gauge), CO 72 sts. Do not join. P 1 row. Divide sts & join; placing marker for beginning/end-of rnd.
Begin Mini-Cable Pattern: Mini-cable st = K2T: K2 sts together & K the first st separately. The mini-cable stitch has various names in the literature. It is essentially a twisted stitch, but is actually easier on the hands via this method and uses no cable needle. Rnd 1: *(P2, K2T, K2T) around. Rnd 2: *(P2, K4) around. Work in pattern until sock leg is ~7 in. from CO, or desired length. End with Rnd 2.
Heel The heel is worked on half+2 sts [38 sts]. K 19 sts. Turn. Sl-1, & P across 38 sts. Place rem 34 sts on holder for instep. Heel Row 1 (front): *(Sl-1, K1), across. Turn. Heel Row 2 (back): Sl-1 & P across remaining Sts. Turn Rep these 2 rows until heel is 2.5 in, or desired length, from start. Heel turn: Setup rows: On front, K across 21 sts; K2tog, K1, turn. On back, Sl-1, P5, P2tog, P1, turn. Front heel turn: Sl-1, K across to 1 st before gap; K2tog, K1, turn. Back heel turn: Sl-1, P across to 1 st before gap; P2tog, P1, turn. Repeat these two rows until all heel sts are used up, ending on heel back. Gusset Pickup: With new needle #1, K half of sts; this will be needle #3. With new needle (to be needle #1) K rem sts. PU slipped sts going down side of sock. With a new needle (needle #2) prepare to K instep sts. Sock instep continues in pattern as for leg, with slight change on two side edges. PU & K sts going up heel side & K sts reserved on needle #3. Gusset Decreases: To dec back to initial 72 sts (or fewer if your foot circumference is smaller than your ankle), work 2 rnds. Gusset rnd 1: K all sts on needles 1 & 3; work needle 2 in pattern, alternating 2 pattern rnds as established above. Gusset rnd 2: Needle 1 - Knit across to last 3 sts; K2tog, K1. Needle 2 - K in established pattern. Needle 3 - K1, Sl-1, K1, PSSO, & K to end of needle. Repeat Gusset rnds 1 & 2 until you have returned to starting number of sts.
Patterned Foot: Sock as shown now has a change of pattern for remainder of foot. Needles 1 & 3: work in K1, P1 rib. Needle 2: Drop rnd 1 of mini-cable pattern & work only P2, K4 rib, with small modifications you made on two side edges. Knit thusly until sock foot is ~2 in shorter than longest toe (2 in less than desired sock foot length).
Toe: Check arrangement of sts before beginning. You should have half sts on needle #2, and remaining half split evenly between needles 1 & 3. (Any extra sts go onto needle #2). Toe rnd 1: Needle 1 - K across to last 3 sts; K2tog, K1. Needle 2 - K1, Sl-1, K1, PSSO; K across to last 3 sts; K2tog, K1. Needle 3 - K1, Sl-1, K1, PSSO; K across to end. Toe rnd 2: K only, with no decs, on all 3 needles. Work toe, alternating rnds 1 & 2 until only ~20 sts remain. Now work only Toe rnd 1 until only ~8 st remain. Close the toe by your desired method.
Finishing: work in all ends. Make the 2nd sock.
