Rigid Heddle Tarahumara Corn Towels

As Featured in Easy Weaving with
Little Looms 2020

The Tarahumara People of Mexico
Corn is such an important staple to the Tarahumara people. They grow all of their own food and live completely off-the-grid.

I loved learning about the Tarahumara people and the many uses for the corn they grow. I designed these towels to portray the colorful corn kernels that are used for making their tortillas, pinole and tamales.

Colors of the Earth
Indian corn is fascinating with colors ranging from white, yellow, red, orange, gold and blue. It's amazing to think that something so beautiful could come from one seed.

Colors that Inspire.
I was then motivated to weave towels is these brilliant colors. I also wanted some texture added to these towels and Caterpillar Cotton is the perfect yarn for this project, with its beautiful crimped spiral plied texture. By using a pick-up stick I was able to add even more texture and interest.
