There are lots of ways to measure WPI - including wrapping your yarn around a piece of cardboard or ruler.

We now have this handy WPI ruler to help!  Because who doesn't love a handy tool?

This Cotton Clouds WPI Ruler is designed to allow you to perfectly measure handspun and commercial yarns, determining wraps per inch for your yarns.

To use this ruler, just wrap your yarn in the notched areas for either 12, 10, or 8 wpi.

Choosing a sett will determine the characteristics of your finished product. A close or dense sett makes stronger and stiffer cloth. A loose or open sett makes drapier, gauzier cloth.

In weaving, the sett is how close together (or how far apart) the warp ends are. The sett is often expressed as a number, followed by the term "EPI," which stands for "ends per inch." Deciding on a sett is a skill that takes practice and plenty of sampling, but I like to use our WPI Ruler to get a ballpark idea of which sett to choose.

Remember, if you pattern calls for doubled warp threads, be sure to wrap your yarns double in the notches on your ruler.  It will give you a guide to help you determine the sett for your next project.
