Crochet Thread Sizes
Cotton Clouds offers crochet thread from sizes 3 to 20. Diameter is inversely proportional to number, so size 3 is nearly as thick as yarn and size 20 is nearly as fine as sewing thread. Thread may also be categorized by number of plies (3/2, 5/2, 10/2 and 20/2. Size 10 thread is known as bedspread weight. Smaller sizes (40 and up) are rarely used anymore.
Most patterns will call for size 10 crochet thread or size 10 crochet cotton -- this is the most common size of thread and is generally worked with a size 6 or 7 steel crochet hook. This size thread is ideal for doilies, tablecloths and edgings.
Size 20 is a smaller thread and is sometimes used for very delicate doilies and edgings. It is usually worked with a size 9 or 10 steel crochet hook.
Generally, the rule is the higher the number, the finer the thread. Those who love to crochet in miniature often use these very fine threads to make very tiny dollhouse accessories and tiny stuffed animals.
